Construction on this famous adobe church began in 1772 and was completed in 1815 by Franciscan Fathers. It is located a few miles south of Taos Pueblo in New Mexico. The Taos Chamber of Commerce states that it is one of the most photographed and painted churches in the world. It was the subject of numerous paintings by Georgia O'Keeffe and photographed by Ansel Adams and Paul Strand.
It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970 and has been designated as a World Heritage Church. Interior photographing is prohibited.
